A team of experts of down town hospital operated on a two-day-old baby and removed a rare large tumor of the throat through laser assisted surgery.

The miracle baby who was born at down town hospital had a severe breathing difficulty which was attended on time by Dr. Nitin Agarwal, Pediatrician and Dr. Toijam Soni Lyngdoh, Pediatric Surgeon of down town hospital.

Further evaluation revealed a large tumor obstructing the airway. "It blocked the entire breathing passage and the tongue and the lower jaw were split into two" said Dr. Lyngdoh. He also emphasized the difficulty in manipulating the tumor as it was very close to the airway opening, with no room left for inserting the airway tube. The entire airway had to be bypassed using needle tracheotomy and jet ventilation prior to the surgery by the specialists of Anesthetists.

After a 4 hour long surgery led by Dr. Lyngdoh, with the team of Anesthetists Dr. Krishna Acharyya, Dr. Kailash Bhattachaya, Dr. Siben Datta and Dr. Shikha Choudhury, ENT specialists Dr. Jeumon Talukdar, Dr. D.J. Dutta and Dr. Satish Reddy, the tumor was successfully removed.

Dr. Lyngdoh also added that these kind of tumors may be detected early before birth by antenatal anomaly scan properly so that Paediatric Surgeon can attend at the time f delivery and correct the anomaly through EXIT procedures, i.e., operating on the baby before clamping the umbilical cord, immediately after birth.

However, the baby made an uneventful post operative recovery and has been discharged on the 11th post operative day.
